The City of Tucson Department of Transportation holds a public wrap-up meeting on the ADA Inventory and Transition Plan that they’ve been working on since 2014. The gist is to collect data on the existing condition of Tucson streets and sidewalks relative to ADA compliance, and the public is being asked to rank locations as well as indicate concerns at existing locations. The NFB BRAILLE ENRICHMENT FOR LITERACY AND LEARNING (BELL) ACADEMY prepares blind and low vision children ages four through twelve to grow into confident and independent blind people. The program provides Braille and non-visual skills instruction through fun, hands-on learning in a day program or residential setting. In addition to Braille crafts, games, and other engaging projects, children learn vital independent living skills, interact with blind adults who serve as mentors, and enjoy field trips to sites related to the curriculum. Through these activities and interactions, the children learn that blindness or low vision does not define them or their future. This runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at SAAVI in Tucson. Camp Abilities is a comprehensive educational sports camp for children and young adults who are blind, deafblind, or have multiple disabilities including visual impairment. The camp provides sports instruction, adapted to individual needs, and 1:1 coaching for each child. Camp Abilities Tucson serves 25-30 athletes with visual impairments each summer.
